About the Musical Terms Trainer

ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory asks you to choose the meaning of Italian, French and German performance directions, from allegro and diminuendo to perdendosi, bewegt and retenu. The list is cumulative from Grades 1 to 5, so a short quiz of ten terms can't tell you whether you know them all.

  • Check every term once. All 158 terms, in one go or split into 2 or 4 sessions, with “I don’t know” instead of guessing.
  • Learn only what you missed. Short lessons in sets of eight, each term drilled until you get it right three times, with regular reviews.
  • Revise until every term is right. A final revision of all 158 terms; anything missed goes into the next round.

Questions follow the exam format of Section 6.1, and the wrong answers are close to the right one, so you can't pass on guesswork. For the full term lists, ornaments and instruments, see the Grade 5 Theory Section 6 revision guide.
