For instrumental and vocal teachers

Get a student through Grade 5 theory without giving up their instrument lessons

When a student needs Grade 5 theory before Grade 6, lesson time is the real cost. The mock exams and trainers do the drilling and explaining between lessons. You check readiness in a minute and keep the lesson for the instrument.

Modelled on the ABRSM Grade 5 digital exam. Not official ABRSM papers, and not affiliated with ABRSM.

Sound familiar?

Your lesson time is for the instrument

Thirty minutes a week can’t cover both a practical piece and a theory syllabus.

The exam is online now

Grade 5 theory is sat on a computer, with its own question types and layout. If you last taught it on paper, the format has moved on.

No ready-made materials

Teaching Grade 5 once or twice a year doesn’t justify building a bank of worksheets and mock papers.

What you get: mock exams, trainers and tracking

Mocks in the digital exam format

Each paper follows the online exam item by item, 60 items in the same order, 75 marks. Your student meets the format long before exam day.

Explanations that do the teaching

When the student trains a section, every wrong answer comes with a step-by-step explanation. They learn between lessons and you don’t have to re-explain everything.

Unlimited classroom use

Open a trainer or a mock paper in the lesson whenever a topic needs a few minutes together. There’s no limit on classroom use.

Section trainers for the gaps

Rhythm, clefs, keys, intervals, chords, terms and music in context, plus a drill for each of the 30 paper subsections. Point the student at the section they’re weak in.

Track your students in a minute

Before a lesson, open the student’s overview: exam readiness, section breakdown and what to practise next. You’ll see what they practised since last week and know when they’re ready to enter.

Three ways to practise

Train one section at a time

A trainer for each of the 30 paper subsections, from time signatures to music in context. Get something wrong and the system explains why, step by step, then gives you another one.

Walk through a complete paper in exam order and answer as you go. Each explanation appears straight away, so it’s a guided tour of the exam, not a test.

Take it under exam conditions

Sit a timed paper with explanations held back until the end. You get a mark out of 75 and a pass / merit / distinction grade, just like exam day.

A light-touch way to fit Grade 5 around lessons

  1. Step 1

    Start with the free check

The 10-minute exam-ready check shows which sections are already secure. Many instrumental students know more theory than they think.

  2. Step 2

    Assign one section a week

Use five minutes at the end of a lesson to set the next trainer. The explanations take care of the rest.

  3. Step 3

    A mock every few weeks

A timed mock gives a mark out of 75, and the overview updates by itself.

  4. Step 4

Enter when the marks are steady

Two or three timed mocks comfortably above 50 (the pass mark) is a good sign.

Frequently asked questions

I haven’t taught Grade 5 theory for years. Is that a problem?
No. The mocks follow the current digital exam, and the explanations cover each topic. You can sit a practice paper yourself in walkthrough mode to see what your student will face.
Can I use it for just one student?
Yes. Teacher Basic covers up to five student seats, and the student can also subscribe to Basic on their own if that suits the family better.
What score does my student need?
The ABRSM Grade 5 theory exam is marked out of 75. 50 is a pass, 60 a merit and 65 a distinction. Timed mocks use the same scale.
